For the price, (£9.99 for the twin-pack at time of writing this review), these are a superb torches. They are nicely anodised red in colour, (as per the item description photos), made of aluminium, and overall, are of excellent construction. (O-ring seals etc.).
Size-wise, they are ~13cm in length (zoomed out), and ~14.2cm in length (zoomed in). The body is ~28mm diameter, and the head is ~40mm diameter at widest point.
Each comes complete with wrist lanyard, 3xAAA battery holder, 3xAAA disposable alkaline batteries, and an 18650 battery holder tube. (NB: optional 18650 battery is not supplied).
At full power, even using the supplied “no-name” AAA batteries, they are exceptionally bright, and with three brightness settings should cater for most general needs.
The (fourth), strobe setting is supremely bright, and the (fifth) S.O.S flashing signal setting is also very bright.
Zooming from wide beam to narrow spot is easily done, by sliding the front part of the torch body forwards or backwards as necessary. The tail-switch is recessed to prevent accidental switching, but is easy to operate, and has a good positive action.
Note that these torches, unlike some of the more expensive makes, do not have a “memory”, and always switch on at highest light output, regardless of whichever setting was last in use.
Although the AAA batteries supplied are perfectly serviceable, I’d suggest replacing them with “leak-resistant” batteries of known manufacture, particularly if the torches are likely to be left with batteries installed for lengthy periods.
Regarding batteries, it should be noted that whilst AAA type do provide a light output which at highest setting should be adequate for most everyday needs, the use of an 18650 type 3.7volt Lithium-ion rechargeable battery would significantly improve both light output and run-time. The downside of that option is that rechargeable 18650 batteries are not found on the shelf at typical local stores, and they will need a Li-ion battery specific charger. Note that normal NiCd / NiMH chargers aren’t suitable for use with 3.7-volt 18650 type Li-ion rechargeable batteries.
NB: As a tactical self-defence tool, the torch’s semi-castellated bezel is robust, and sharp enough to do some damage if ever needed to fend off an attacker. The strobe is certainly bright enough to potentially disorient a would-be attacker, but having to cycle through the various settings to get to strobe mode would be less than ideal under such circumstances.
However, for the general everyday needs of most users, these torches are well up to the mark, and well worth the asking price.
